Maximising Shade with Your Gazebo: Tips & Tricks

Nothing beats spending time outdoors, but if one thing can turn a perfect day into an uncomfortable experience, it’s the scorching New Zealand sun. We see it all the time in people diving into markets or outdoor events for the first time: sunburn, sweat, and plenty of regret.

A temporary gazebo is the perfect solution for providing instant shelter against that blazing sun, but how can you maximise that shade? The gazebo’s fabric is still technically permeable to allow some sun through, so it’s important to provide as much shade as possible if you’ll be in the sun all day.

To help you stay cool and comfortable, we’ve put together a quick guide packed with gazebo cooling tips. Read on to learn five essential ways to add extra shade to gazebos of all shapes and sizes.

Pick the right location.

Finding the perfect spot to set up your gazebo is key to maximising shade. Look for strong tree cover or tall structures to block out any harsh incoming sunlight, but be mindful of potential falling branches or uneven ground.

Check the sun’s path and consider what time of day you’ll be using your gazebo. Since the sun moves throughout the day, placing your gazebo in a spot with consistent shade will make a big difference. The sun is highest at midday, so if possible, position your gazebo to cast shade over seating or key areas during the intense afternoon heat. If you’re using it for an event or stall, think about foot traffic patterns and how shifting light might affect visibility or comfort throughout the day.

Use sidewalls or sunshades.

Adding sidewalls to your gazebo can drastically improve the amount of shade you’ll get. Luckily, there are many different sidewall types to choose from, including:

  • Solid sidewalls: Ideal for maximum shade, but don’t let as much light in when you might need it.
  • Window walls: Act just like your home’s walls by providing a clear window for some strategic light to make it through.
  • Roll-up door walls: Great for flexibility, allowing you to adjust the shade as needed throughout the day.

Adjust your gazebo’s height for better shade.

Lowering the height of your gazebo can create a cooler, shadier space. If the sun is coming from one direction, adjust the gazebo’s legs so one side is lower than the other. This increases the shade cast underneath. Alternatively, tilting the canopy slightly toward the sun can block more direct rays while allowing airflow. Most temporary gazebos—especially large models—have adjustable legs, making it easy to adjust the height and stay ahead of the intense sun.

Get the air flowing.

Maximising shade is important, but keeping your space cool is just as crucial for effective sun protection. There are a few ways to catch a breeze while staking your claim at a market or event. Here are some of the strategies you can rely on to blow away that humid air:

  • Raise your gazebo’s sidewalls strategically. Leaving gaps at the bottom or partially rolling up one or more walls encourages better airflow while still providing shade and protection. You can also opt for a mesh window wall for enhanced ventilation.
  • Bring portable fans for extra ventilation. Battery-powered or solar-powered fans help circulate air, preventing stuffiness, especially in hot, enclosed spaces. Position them to direct airflow where it’s needed most.
  • Choose your location wisely. If possible, set up in an open area where natural breezes can flow through. Positioning your gazebo in the right place can make a significant difference in comfort.

Add an awning.

Finally, consider adding a flat awning set to your gazebo for even more shade. This simple pop-up attachment extends your coverage, offering extra protection from both sun and rain. With a heavy-duty frame and waterproof fabric, it’s a lifesaver on those unpredictable Aotearoa days when the weather changes every five minutes.
