Rain, Wind and Round the Bays: The Gazebo That Keeps Coffee Guy Petone Trading
Geoff Bowen runs Coffee Guy Petone, part of one of New Zealand’s largest mobile coffee franchises. His week looks something like this: a drive-through operation in Waterloo on weekdays, a corporate run covering Petone and Seaview, and on weekends, events. School fetes, community days, sports fixtures, and at the bigger end of the scale, international rugby games at the stadium. Wherever people gather outdoors in Wellington, Geoff and his van are often somewhere nearby, serving barista coffee, cold drinks, and iced drinks to whoever needs them.
Running a mobile coffee business at outdoor events in Wellington is not for the tentative. The city’s weather is a constant variable, and for a vendor whose entire livelihood on any given day depends on being able to operate from the back of a van in the open air, shelter is not optional. It is the foundation of the whole operation.
More Than Just Shelter
When Geoff joined the Coffee Guy franchise, the gazebo came as part of the package. What he discovered over time was that a well-chosen gazebo does two things simultaneously that are both essential to a mobile coffee business.

The first is practical protection. Wellington’s rain and drizzle are a daily reality for outdoor vendors, and being able to stay dry while serving customers makes the difference between a comfortable trading day and a miserable one. More importantly, it makes the difference between being able to operate at all and having to pack up and leave.
The second is visibility. A fully branded canopy with the Coffee Guy logo printed across it functions as a mobile billboard at every event Geoff attends. In a busy event environment with multiple vendors, a plain white tent and a logoed canopy are not equal in terms of how easily customers find you. Geoff has had people walk over specifically to ask where he got his gazebo from, having noticed it from across the site. That kind of attention is hard to buy through any other form of marketing.
“My gazebo is a godsend. It keeps me dry in the rain and drizzle, and with the canopy all logoed out, it’s a real focus point.”
Round the Bays: The Day It Really Mattered
Wellington’s Round the Bays is one of the city’s iconic running events, drawing thousands of participants through the waterfront course each year. Geoff had secured a vendor position on the course, a significant opportunity, and one he was not about to walk away from regardless of what the forecast said.

The weather on the day was serious. The event came close to cancellation, and when it went ahead, the conditions that greeted vendors on site were genuinely challenging. Wind was the main problem. Geoff got his gazebo up, ratchet-strapped it to the van and across the van for additional security, and started trading.
What happened next illustrated exactly why gazebo quality matters for a mobile operator. Event security began working through the vendor area, identifying gazebos that were moving and asking those operators to take them down. Several vendors had to pack up. Security visited Geoff’s setup multiple times, assessed it, and left it standing each time because the anchoring was solid and the frame was not moving.
The consequence of being asked to pack down would have been straightforward: close the van, lose the day’s trading, and leave. The gazebo holding its position meant Geoff kept serving customers through the event while others around him shut down.
“Had they asked me to take down the gazebo, I would more than likely have had to close up the van and leave for the day.”
Local Support That Works
One of the reasons Geoff has remained loyal to Hercules is the proximity of the Petone store. For a mobile operator who depends on his setup being functional every weekend, downtime is expensive. When he has had incidents that required attention, the turnaround has been measured in a day or two rather than weeks.
Being able to drive to a local store, hand over the gazebo, and have it back quickly is not something every supplier offers. For Geoff, it is a meaningful part of what makes the relationship work in practice rather than just in theory.
A Business Asset, Not Just a Tent
After a year of trading through Wellington events, Geoff’s view of his gazebo has settled into something clear. It is not peripheral equipment. It is one of the most important assets in his operation, alongside the van itself. The shelter keeps him trading in conditions that would otherwise shut him down. The branding keeps him visible in environments where being noticed directly affects how many customers he serves.
For other mobile operators and outdoor vendors weighing up whether a commercial-grade branded gazebo justifies the investment, Geoff’s experience at Round the Bays makes the case more directly than any product specification could.
You can call us, visit in person, or order online and have it sorted in days, not months. Our team has actually handled the repair you’re describing before, because they’ve seen pretty much every type of damage a gazebo can take over twelve-plus years in this business.
And if a repair is a bit beyond a simple part swap, our in-house repair service can take care of it. That’s not something most gazebo brands in New Zealand offer at all.
If you run a mobile business or trade at outdoor events and want a shelter that keeps you operating in real NZ conditions, explore our custom printed gazebo range or visit our Wellington store to see the commercial range in person.
