A&P Show Exhibitors: How to Create a Display That Stands Out

A&P shows are a different kind of event to work. They are louder, muddier, more spread out, and more competitive for attention than most other exhibition environments. The people walking past your display have been on their feet since early morning, they have seen a hundred other exhibits, and they will make a decision about whether to stop at yours in about three seconds.

Getting noticed at an A&P show is not just about having a good product. It is about having a setup that communicates professionalism, draws people in from a distance, and holds together through two or three days of agricultural show conditions. That last part is where a lot of exhibitors get caught out.

Here is what actually works, based on what we see from exhibitors across New Zealand’s A&P show circuit.

Start With the Right Shelter

Everything else in your display depends on your shelter being solid. A sagging, flexing, or visually tired gazebo undermines everything underneath it, no matter how good your product is or how well-designed your signage is.

A&P show conditions are demanding. Two or three days of setup, extended periods in direct sun, afternoon winds, overnight dew, and the general wear of a large outdoor event on your equipment. This is not a Saturday market where you pack up after six hours. Your shelter needs to perform reliably across the full duration.

For most agricultural show exhibitors, a 3x3m or 3x6m commercial-grade gazebo is the foundation of the setup. The 3x3m works well for focused displays, smaller product ranges, or information and demonstration stations. The 3x6m gives you the depth to create a proper display environment with product at the back and customer engagement space at the front.

Our event marquee range also covers larger structures for exhibitors who need substantial coverage, which is worth considering if you are running a multi-person team or demonstrating equipment that takes up significant floor space.

Branding That Works From Across the Grounds

The single most effective thing most A&P show exhibitors can do to improve their display is to put their branding on the canopy.

Here is why that matters specifically at an agricultural show. The grounds are large. Visitors are navigating on foot across a wide area, often looking for specific exhibitors or making decisions about where to go based on what they can see from a distance. A branded canopy with your business name, logo, and colours visible on all four sides creates a visual anchor that people can find and return to. A plain white or generic tent is invisible from 50 metres away.

For rural businesses especially, the A&P show is often the most important brand visibility moment of the year. The people in attendance are your customers, your potential customers, and the community your business operates within. How you present matters in a context where everyone knows everyone and reputation is built over years.

Our custom printing service handles full-colour printing across the canopy, including logos, business name, contact details, and any other branding elements you want visible from across the grounds.

Signage: Layers That Work at Different Distances

Good agricultural show signage works at three distances: from across the grounds, from ten metres away, and from inside your display.

From across the grounds: Your branded canopy does this job. Bold colour, clear logo, business name readable at a distance. Nothing more is needed at this level because legibility drops off quickly with text size.

From ten metres: Feather flags and banners positioned at the front and sides of your display. These carry your category or headline message and give visitors context before they step in. Feather flags in particular are effective at A&P shows because they move in the breeze, which catches peripheral vision in a busy environment.

Inside the display: Printed sidewalls, pull-up banners, product information boards, price displays, and any demonstration materials. This is where visitors who have stepped in get the detail they need to make a decision. Keep it clear and uncluttered. Agricultural show visitors are not reading dense brochures while standing in a paddock.

Our banners and display range covers feather flags, pull-up banners, and printed backdrops for all three levels of signage.

Layout: How You Use the Space Inside

The layout of your display does as much work as the signage. A few principles that hold up across different types of agricultural show exhibits:

  • Keep your best product or demonstration visible from outside the canopy. People decide whether to step in based on what they can see from the path. Putting your most compelling item at the back means most visitors never see it.
  • Create a clear entry point. A gazebo with product and equipment pushed right to the front edges creates a psychological barrier. Leave space for people to step in comfortably, then engage them once they are inside.
  • Put working demonstrations where they are visible from outside. If you are demonstrating a product or process, position it so that passing visitors can see it happening. Motion and activity draw attention in a way that static displays do not.
  • Use height. Flat, table-level displays get lost in a crowded show environment. Vertical elements, whether product towers, display shelving, or banner stands, create visual interest and help your display read as a complete professional setup rather than a table with stuff on it.

Weather-Proofing for Multi-Day Shows

This is the part that first-time agricultural show exhibitors often underestimate. A&P shows run through late summer and autumn, which in New Zealand means warm days, cool nights, morning dew, and the occasional afternoon shower. Your display needs to handle all of that without requiring constant attention.

  • Canopy: make sure it is properly waterproof, not just water-resistant. A leaking canopy after overnight rain can damage any product, display, or equipment underneath it.
  • Anchoring: agricultural show grounds are usually grass or compacted earth, so ground pegs are your primary anchoring method. Use them at all four corners, and add weight bags as a secondary layer if it’s windy. Follow the setup guidance for your specific model and always pack down if conditions become unsafe.
  • Sidewalls: closed sidewalls at night protect your display and any equipment you are leaving on site. During the day, open or half-wall configurations let air circulate and allow visibility into the display from outside.
  • Product protection: anything that cannot get wet or dusty needs its own cover or case overnight. Do not rely on the gazebo alone to protect valuable equipment or perishable products through the night.

The Checklist Before You Leave for the Show

This is worth going through the day before, not on the morning of.

  • Gazebo frame in good condition, all connectors locking properly, no bent or damaged legs
  • Canopy clean and waterproofing intact
  • Carry bag and all poles accounted for
  • Anchoring kit: pegs, weight bags, mallet
  • Signage: branded canopy, banners, flags, product boards
  • Sidewalls if needed for overnight protection
  • Display materials, product samples, demonstration equipment
  • Repair kit for minor on-site fixes

A well-set-up A&P show exhibit takes preparation, but it is the kind of preparation that compounds across every show you do. Once your display system is sorted, each show gets easier and more effective.
